Bondi sits in Waverley Council, which runs a four-bin system with an unusual split: the red bin is collected weekly and it is where food scraps go, because Waverley’s green bin takes garden waste only. Food organics are still a trial here, limited to selected households.
Everything else is fortnightly. A recycling bin can therefore sit for two weeks in beach heat before it is emptied.
Council also will not collect waste sitting beside a bin or overflowing from the top — an overfull bin is a missed bin.

The fortnightly cycle matters more than people expect. Waverley asks for containers to be empty and rinsed, and a yellow bin that has held unrinsed jars for a fortnight in February is not a bin anyone wants to open. That is the bin we are usually called about.
What Waverley will and will not take
Waverley gives each household three free clean-up collections a year for items too big for a bin. Book it rather than leaving things out — unbooked piles are illegal dumping, and on a street like Hall Street they do not go unnoticed for long.
Two things Council is firm about. It will not collect anything sitting beside a bin or standing proud of the lid, so an overfull bin is simply a missed bin for the week. And the green bin is garden waste only here — food scraps belong in the red bin until the FOGO trial is extended.
What we clean in Bondi
Apartments and strata. Bondi is apartment-dense and most buildings run a shared bin area rather than individual bins. A shared bin takes more use in a week than a household bin does in a month, and is cleaned far less often.
