Garage Clean-Outs in Sydney

Garages fill up over years and get cleared out in an afternoon — if someone else does the lifting. Most garage clear-outs stall for the same two reasons: nobody wants to shift the heavy things, and nobody knows what to do with the half-tin of paint on the shelf.

Typical clean-outs we do

End-of-lease clear-outs, deceased estates, pre-sale tidy-ups before photography, downsizing, and the ordinary case of a garage that hasn’t fitted a car in six years.

What we handle

Furniture and whitegoods, boxes and packaging, old tools and hardware, bikes and sporting gear, timber offcuts, garden equipment, and general accumulated clutter.

The shelf of things nobody can put in a bin

Almost every garage has one. The NSW EPA is explicit that these must never go in a kerbside bin of any colour:

Batteries — every type, single-use and rechargeable
Gas bottles and cylinders
Paint and paint tins with liquid still in them
Household and pool chemicals
Motor oils and other oils
Smoke detectors

The reason is fire. The EPA ran its “one battery can spark a blaze” campaign statewide from November 2025 precisely because compacted batteries ignite in collection trucks and at sorting facilities.

Where that material actually goes

To a Community Recycling Centre, free. There are more than 100 across NSW, they’re permanent, and they take exactly the things kerbside collections can’t.

For the Lower North Shore the closest is the Northern Sydney Community Recycling Centre, 8 Waltham Street, Artarmon — open Wednesday to Friday 8am–2pm and weekends 8am–4pm. It accepts e-waste, all batteries including the embedded ones in devices, gas bottles and aerosols. The NSW EPA also runs Household Chemical CleanOut events through the year.

Councils will not take this material in a clean-up. Lane Cove, Waverley, Randwick, Ku-ring-gai, Hornsby and the Northern Beaches all name paint, chemicals and gas bottles on their exclusion lists, and several will leave your entire pile behind if one of them is in it.

Asbestos — stop before you touch it

Old garages in Sydney are a common place to find fibro sheeting, and it turns up in wall linings, eaves and roofing. myBins is not a licensed asbestos removalist and we will not handle it. Asbestos can only be disposed of at a landfill specifically licensed to accept it, and every council in our service area excludes it from kerbside collection.

If you think you’ve found it, leave it undisturbed and get a licensed assessor in. We’ll tell you the same thing on the phone rather than turn up and take your money.

What needs special handling

How we quote

Send a few photos and we’ll give you a price before we arrive. Garages are easier to quote from a photo than almost anything else, because the volume is visible at a glance. The quote doesn’t change once we start unless you add to the pile.

If most of what you have is on your council’s accepted list and you can wait for a booking, we’ll tell you to do that instead. It’s free and it’s the same outcome.
