What councils refuse, and why it lands back on you
If you are clearing a site, the fastest way to lose a day is to stack material at the kerb that Council will not take. The exclusion lists differ in detail but agree on the categories that matter to a maintenance contractor.
Almost universally refused in a kerbside clean-up across Sydney:
- Building and renovation waste — bricks, concrete, tiles, plasterboard, guttering, soil, rubble
- Treated or painted timber, fencing, whole pallets
- Tyres, car parts and motor oils
- Paint, chemicals, gas bottles and anything pressurised
- Asbestos and fibro sheeting, which can only go to a landfill specifically licensed to accept it
There are size limits too, and they are lower than people expect. Mosman refuses anything over 30kg or longer than 1.5 metres. The Northern Beaches caps items at 40kg and 1.8 metres. The City of Sydney will not take anything over 1.5 metres or 100kg. A full-size wardrobe or a three-seater lounge fails at least one of those tests in most areas.
Put one refused item in the pile and the whole pile can be left. Several councils then treat what remains as illegal dumping — Woollahra’s fines start at $320.
Where subcontracting the bins actually pays
Most maintenance contractors can move a bin. The question is whether it is worth your labour rate to do it.
It usually is not when:
- The site is across town from the rest of your run, and the bin job is fifteen minutes of work plus forty minutes of driving.
- The bins need presenting on a fixed council day that does not line up with your maintenance schedule.
- The work is recurring and low-skill, but still has to happen every week without fail.
- The client is asking for a cleaned and sanitised bin rather than a moved one, which needs equipment you would otherwise have to buy and carry.
We work as a subcontractor under your name where that is what the client expects, or direct to the client where you would rather not carry it. Either way you get one invoice and no equipment to maintain.
