Then nothing much until the following weekend — which is exactly the pattern that leaves residue sitting in a bin for six days in the sun.

The problem with weekend-peak waste

Volume arrives all at once. Standard bin allocations are sized for steady use, not a Saturday tournament.
Canteen waste is organic and wet. It’s the fastest to smell and the most attractive to pests.
Long gaps between use. Waste sits from Sunday to Friday, often in an exposed, sunny location.
Volunteers do the work. Club committees and parents end up managing bins, which isn’t why they volunteered.

Sporting clubs are named in the 2026 food organics mandate

Worth flagging early because it catches committees by surprise. NSW is phasing in a food organics mandate for large food-waste generators from July 2026, and the staged rollout names clubs alongside pubs, hospitals and aged care. Where it applies, food organics must be separated from general waste and collected at least weekly, and the duty sits with the building complex manager or owner rather than an individual tenant or canteen operator.

For a ground with a licensed club attached, that is a real change to how the bin area works — and a separated food stream means wetter, heavier, more concentrated bins that need cleaning more often, not less.

Why a match day breaks an ordinary bin schedule

A sporting ground generates a week’s worth of waste in about six hours, then sits quiet for five days. Council collection is built for the opposite pattern — steady output, regular pickup — so the two never quite line up.

What that looks like in practice:

Saturday fills every bin by mid-afternoon. Once bins are full, the overflow goes beside them, and by Sunday morning it has been through by birds.
Canteen waste is the worst of it. Wrappers and cups are bulky but harmless. Cooked food, sauces and drink dregs are what soak into the base of a bin and stay there.
Summer is the multiplier. A bin that has held warm canteen waste through a February weekend is a different problem to the same bin in July.
Nobody owns the bins. Grounds are typically council-owned, run by a club, used by multiple codes across seasons. Between them, the bin area is everyone’s and no one’s.

Working around the season, not the calendar

We schedule around fixtures rather than a fixed date — heavier through the playing season, lighter in the off-season, and a reset clean between codes when a ground changes over from winter to summer sport.

For grounds where the club and the council each own part of the problem, we can quote and invoice them separately so neither is waiting on the other to approve the work.
